I teach English at a Title I high school in rural NC. In my World Literature class, we study the Holocaust primarily through the novel Night by Elie Wiesel. Minorities are the majority of the student population. Studying the Holocaust shows students that African Americans are not the only group of people who suffered from oppression, discrimination, etc. Currently, there are other World Literature classes also studying the novel. Last semester, I had to share copies of the novel with another teacher and also make photocopies of chapters for students to share. I am requesting a classroom set of 30 novels for each student to use in class. Again, contributing to our study of the Holocaust will greatly benefit our students. In our area, students have few, if any, opportunities to learn about other cultures. This will be an eye-opening experience for us all. Thanks for your time and consideration.
