Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Imagine for a moment that you are sixteen years old. Imagine that you have a history of failing at school. Imagine that someone tells you that you must go do something you hate to do, something you feel that you are not good at, every day of your life. Imagine you have more important things going on at home: babysitting your younger brother, paying the rent, working at a part-time job earning grocery money. Now imagine that the school you are required to attend each day is filled with gray walls, fighting in the hallway, dilapidated textbooks, and rows upon rows upon rows of hard chairs attached to desks. Would you go to school?
Too many high school students are faced with this challenge. School is unwelcoming - physically and emotionally. We may not be able to do anything about the need for armed police officers, metal detectors, and locker searches, but shouldn't teachers be empowered to make their classrooms warm and comforting? Teachers are not't provided with money to create inspiring learning environments for children. Many teachers don't even have their own classrooms. This is why I decided to create a learning lounge...a place for students to learn in their own way at their own pace in a place that is appealing and inspiring.
To complete this project, I will need materials to create a "coffeehouse" type environment for my American Literature students to recite poetry, read books of their choice, play critical thinking games, and research careers that interest them.
Our lounge will require bean bag chairs, posters, games, and listening and recording equipment. This reading and learning area will make students comfortable in the classroom. This will help them want to learn and create and be inspired.
I teach 65 students each year. These students attend a 90 minute English class each day. This gives us plenty of time to incorporate self-selected learning, an activity which my school has been unable to give me funding for. Allowing students to take hold of their own learning is so important, it's a shame when the resources are not available.
Going to school in inner city Chicago is tough. Going to high school in inner-city Chicago is even tougher. And when you are involuntarily enrolled in a program for reluctant learners, it makes attending school every day even harder. Don't these students deserve to go to school in a place that welcomes them visually and emotionally?
