Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are amazing! They are a diverse group who come to school each day wanting to experience new things and grow. My students quickly learn that we can make excuses or we can make it happen. What makes my students so thoroughly fabulous is how consistently they choose to make it happen despite the obvious challenges they may face.
My school is a Title I school in Kissimmee, Florida with a wide range of diversity and high poverty.
Still, these students always impress visitors, and their very own teacher, with their tenacity and desire to grow and learn more no matter their educational background. There will always be issues in Title I schools and we will always work to overcome the obstacles. DonorsChoose.org is a great way for us to receive the help we need in order to make learning fun for our students.
My Project
The listed titles in this project will go towards our genre specific book clubs. The use of genre allows students to explore books they may have never allowed a chance because it was a genre they never considered reading.
These books will allow students to not only learn about the Hero's Journey monomyth structure, but to also fall in love with some really fantastic books.
The students will be allowed to choose which of the books from the set they want to read and together with a group meet weekly to discuss the plot twists and turns and how the hero in their books is growing as a character. They will also get to see how the hero's journey develops and map the similarities between all the text. The goal is that students understand we are all the hero in our own stories and how easily they can learn from what other characters are going through.
