Our students are proof that creativity is birthed from necessity. My students come to class daily with the goal in mind to reach their highest creative potential by finding solutions in their art making. Despite challenges in their personal lives, being under resourced, and being overlooked in many instances their enthusiasm is contagious.
My diverse body of students come to school daily seeking opportunities to break the cycle of poverty in their families by becoming successful and self-sufficient.Our school serves a low income population.
99% of our student population come from low income households. I feel that that the balance between students developing personally and academically comes with a strong art program. Art creates opportunities for them to materialize, explore different solutions, and develop a skill that will later be applicable and possibly lucrative in their lives.
My Project
My students love Marvel movies, anime, and DC comics. Many times they try to imitate these styles in their own artwork not understanding anatomical correctness. Teaching them to draw themselves as heroes has proven to be an effective way to teach them how to draw bodies correctly, and give them the space to reimagine themselves.
Everyone should see themselves as a hero, recognize their personal power, and know how to present themselves with the same confidence.
Having enough manikins (male and female) will ensure that my students will learn how to draw bodies correctly. Who knows I may have the next Stan Lee among my students,
More than three‑quarters of students from low‑income households
