The HeART Room

My students need art journals to express themselves, problem solve and "de-stress". I'd love if 4th and 5th graders had a safe place, all their own, to work through feelings or just create!

My Students

Hello there, I teach art in Kenosha, WI. My students are from diverse backgrounds....many of my students face daily challenges. 100% of my students receive free lunch and breakfast. Many come from loving families however many have experienced homelessness and/or witnessed violence.

School is their safe place and they love the art room!

It is a place they can express themselves and let their guard down! For many students, the art room is the one place they feel successful and I am hoping to bridge that to other areas.

My Project

I believe if my 4th and 5th graders had an art journal in which they could work through problems and frustrations in a safe place, either visually or with text, their overall focus on other subject area would improve. Making marks predates the verbal language and the act is essential to expressing emotions. When you draw your mind becomes deeply intensely attentive. I believe that having time throughout the week to draw, doodle or write in their art journals could change ones state of mind. Its a calming activity that can help your physical and neurological experience in that moment. That can only translate into a child that is in a better mind-frame for learning.

I believe this would support Disciplinary Literacy by allowing for a place where students can use letters, symbols and visual imagery to give meaning to their ideas and feelings.

If the overall well being of our 4th and 5th grade students is improving, I believe their ability to focus and stay on task in other subject areas will improve. Therefor greater gains can be made.
