This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I love how curious, compassionate, and eager my students are to learn about the world around them. As a proud Haitian-American teacher, it’s important to me that all of my students, especially those of Haitian descent, feel seen, celebrated, and empowered to share their rich heritage. Unfortunately, resources that highlight Haitian culture are often overlooked, leaving Haitian students feeling invisible during moments that should uplift them, like Haitian Heritage Month.

That’s why this project is so important; not just for Haitian students, but for every child to learn about global traditions, unity, and identity.

The Haitian tablecloth will bring color and authenticity to our classroom displays and cultural lessons, sparking conversations about family traditions and national pride. The pilon, a traditional Haitian cooking tool, will be used in a hands-on learning experience where students explore food, history, and storytelling, bringing the culture to life in a tangible, unforgettable way. Storage bags for headphones will allow students to access Haitian read-alouds and Creole language books online, giving them a personalized learning experience that boosts both literacy and cultural appreciation. Miniature Haitian flags will be proudly displayed and worn during classroom celebrations, allowing students to wave their heritage with pride and educate others around them.

Every student deserves to feel proud of who they are and where they come from, and Haitian students deserve more than just a passing mention in the curriculum; they deserve a platform to share their legacy. I am passionate about giving my students a voice and a sense of belonging in a world that often overlooks them. I can't do this without your help.
