This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are a cohort of a Spanish Immersion Program. They have experienced an educational career where Spanish is the medium of education for part of their day. I currently teach the third and fourth groups to go through the cohort. The hope is for the students to continue with the program all the way through high school and for them to be eligible to earn a seal of bi-literacy. To reach that goal I am trying to bring a rich and diverse literature that can speak to our common experiences in the United States and to present different perspectives of reality.

Discussions about race and racism deserve serious attention in our classrooms.

Using literature can assist teachers and students and help center the conversation on topics and characters that reflect our society. It is with this intention that I will use this site to help us start a collection of titles in Spanish that can help facilitate discussions about this important topic.

My Project

Culturally relevant materials with meaningful messages that are contemporary are very difficult to come by in a Spanish instruction classroom. For my students to be able to read "The Hate You Give" in Spanish will be monumental in engaging them in the discussion of race, equity and justice. Any one of these topics are intense and require a critical analysis, "The Hate You Give" will provide us with that opportunity.

The topics of equity and justice should not be confined to the limits of the English language.

My students know that their experiences as both white, and students of color are lived in different realities. To be able to see and hear those realities in another language gives credence to all of our experiences and the vocabulary to express them so.
