Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach 10th grade Intensive Reading in a large district in Central Florida. This school is labeled as a Title I school, meaning that the school receives additional funding because of the poverty in the area. The town is known to have many Non-English speaking citizens. 100% of students receive free breakfast and lunch, with many getting backpacks of food to take home on the weekends. Many families are homeless, live in a hotel, or share housing with another family. The students are underprivileged but eager to learn. The students are kind and respectful towards me. Most of the students are the first in their family to graduate high or attend college.
The students that come through my doors are willing to learn everyday.
I have a great group of students that choose to make the right choices and complete assignments. We have fun in the classroom while learning the necessary standards.
Having positive environment around campus can influence the students to make the right choice and brighten their day.
My Project
I am requesting a class set of The Hate You Give. I teach Intensive Reading and it is hard to get the students "hooked" on reading. I feel that this book will allow them to have the passion for the story. This book will not only give my students an opportunity to read but it will teach them about some of the major social issues we are now facing. This gut-wrenching novel will be a brilliant point of connection as I develop students who LOVE to read and crave effective life lessons. My students need to have the physical text to interact with. Since most of them are English Language Learners this brilliantly written book will allow them to be exposed to new words in appropriate social context. I am hopeful to have this project funded by Christmas so that we can do a book study starting in January!
