The Hate U Give: Spanish Edition

Help me give my students copies of the book The Hate U Give in both English and Spanish, a recorded version of the same book, and an assortment of films related to Tupac Shakur.

My Students

Middle school can be tough. Socially, emotionally, and academically, there can be lots of challenges for students in the early teen years. My students are learning English and adapting to a new culture while navigating these difficult years, and this creates an extra layer of challenge.

My English language learner students are resilient, resourceful, and caring young teens.

These students have been through a great deal beyond their control in their short lives, but they use multiple talents and strengths to overcome current obstacles. We share hands-on experiences as a springboard for launching into a new language. Investigating STEM topics, history and the arts in our language arts classroom allows my older new readers to develop key reading and writing skills with age-appropriate materials.

My Project

The 8th graders in our school are embarking on an exploration of community relationships, social justice and conflict resolution with a reading of The Hate U Give, a teen novel which explores important themes from the Black Lives Matter movement. Small sets of the book in both English and Spanish along with an audio version will allow me to support my English Language Learners students so that they will be able to more fully participate.

The novel The Hate U Give contains multiple references to Tupac Shakur and his words; a collection of DVDs related to his life and career will help my students explore the important themes of this novel and understand their relevancy to their own lives.

My students will use the books in our ESL Language Arts classroom to strengthen literacy skills and vocabulary as they build a better understanding of the current social justice climate in this country.
