Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

It is important for me to expose students to literature they can relate to and enjoy for the sake of enjoying reading and coming to class prepared to discuss and analyze characters, theme, etc. This past year, my 11th grade honors students thoroughly enjoyed the novel, The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas, and could keep their copies after reading it with the class. Several students appreciated annotating their own books without using Post-its (students still used Post-its to organize their details, etc.). Having their own copies also made students feel appreciated as they had never been given a copy of their own at school.

Students should be allowed to own a book at the end of the year, especially one that they have grown to enjoy reading and discussing.

If students do not want a copy of the book at the end of the unit, students can donate it to an incoming student for the following year. This unit is one I collaborate with other 11th-grade teachers so we can plan out meaningful activities that not only cover English common core standards, but also we are able to design academic discussion activities, etc.
