My students attend a school in Baltimore City, MD. My students are bright and ready to explore contemporary social justice issues which is important for them to become social justice agents in their communities.
My scholars need your help to have learning experiences outside of the four walls of the classroom.
This year they will learn skills to read, write, and critically think about the world that we live in.
Part of preparing for the 21st century economy and world is having access to culturally responsive texts. My students will be reading the Hate U Give and would love to see the movie in theater to be able to compare the two medias. This will inspire even greater conversations about the Black Lives Matter Movement, police brutality, and more.
Seeing The Hate U Give will allow students to bring the book to life. For the next few months, students in my police brutality interest group will be studying the history behind law enforcement and civilian relationships. Additionally, students will be studying race and how it plays a huge part in the conversation.
Students will be reading Angie Thomas' The Hate U Give in order to have another story and understanding.
Watching the movie will enhance all the learning that is going on. At the end of the quarter, students will present their findings to their school community. This experience will highlight all of their learning and help students develop skills like comparing and contrasting movies and literature. Additionally, it will serve as a mirror and window for my students to view the world.
