This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My classroom consists of twenty amazing students from Chelsea, MA, just outside Boston, MA. Though many of them come from difficult backgrounds and homelives, the students in my class strive for excellence both inside and outside the classroom. They inherently care about each other and are focused on making sure their peers are successful.

Chelsea, MA is a low income, immigrant community.

My students face a lot of obstacles in their lives, from unstructured home lives to unhealthy and dangerous distractions outside the classroom, but they make up for it with hard work, determination, and a positive attitude. They are truly my inspiration!

My Project

One of the classes I teach is a reading enrichment class with high level readers and writers. The purpose of this class is to keep kids reading and excited about reading. After reading The Hate U Give last year, and especially with the movie coming out, I couldn't think of a better book to do that. All of my students are children of color, and they will recognize and I am sure relate to the themes of oppression, segregation, and racism covered in The Hate U Give. My goal is to pair this reading with a study of Ferguson and the Black Lives Matter movement with the end of goal of students recognizing the power of community activism.
