My Students

My students love art and they also love their fathers. I'd like to help them to make something really special for their dads this year for Father's Day. I'd like my students to make a hand print and add decorations using ceramic glaze pens on an unglazed tile and then firing it to give to their dads.

I have a wonderful class of second graders.

Our school is located in a high immigrant, low income community in California. The parents of most of my students never finished high school. Many of my students will be the first ones in the family to finish high school and hopefully college too. Most of my students are English learners and I have several students with learning disabilities too. I also mainstream learning disabled students and hearing impaired students into my all inclusive classroom.

My Project

I'd like to help my students to make a special keepsake present for Father's Day this year. I'm asking for 40 unglazed ceramic tiles so there will be enough tiles for my class and a small class of hearing impaired 2nd graders who will join us to complete this project. I plan on using the brushes to paint each child's hand with a colorful ceramic glaze and then having them make a hand print on the tile. After the glaze dries, I plan on letting my students use the set of assorted ceramic glaze pens to personalize and decorate their tile to create a special one-of-a-kind present for their dad. The next day each child will paint on several layers of clear gloss glaze. When the glaze has dried I plan on firing all the tiles in the kiln at our school. The end result will be a very special present that each of my students will be able to give to their dad or other special father figure in their life as a Father's Day gift.

This project will allow my students to use their creativity to create a special handmade present that they can proudly give to their fathers or special father figures in their life.

I'm sure this project will give my students wonderful memories of their time in second grade and it will give their fathers a special gift that they will treasure for many years to come.
