My Students

I don't know how it happens, but every year, I am always given the best students in the school. My kids have an amazing capacity for kindness and love. They love helping each other. They love helping me and are often disappointed when I tell them I have no other jobs for them to do because they have done them already.

Even though they come from the poorest of the poor in our inner-city community, they are always thinking of others before themselves.

We have several programs set up in our school to help with child hunger on the weekends and other basic life necessities. One day when students were getting pantry packs for the weekend, I overheard a couple of students planning to take their food to the homeless shelter down the street because they needed it more. Every day I hear or see them do something wonderful that makes me think that these kids are going to make the world a much better place.

My Project

Covid-19 has affected our school in ways we never could have predicted. As teachers, we have done our very best to support our students in every aspect of their lives, from helping them catch up academically after being shut down to helping them cope with the overwhelming emotions they feel on a regular basis.

What we didn't expect to have to deal with was the shortage of material we use on a daily basis in our classroom.

The shortages or random materials like paper, whiteboard markers, and even the sporks students use for their in class breakfast have put added stress on teachers as well as students. With the materials from this project, my students will have a digital writing pad they can use for whole group math practice, scratch paper when they take a test, or even a pad to write themselves reminders. The sporks also will be very helpful so my students won't have to use the lids of apple sauces as a spoon, or use their fingers to eat messier parts of their daily classroom breakfasts and snacks. They will be responsible for washing and storing their spork every day.

I didn’t expect the social connections between my students to be impacted so heavily by the stresses of the last two years. Whether students were learning from home or in school, the impact was widespread and deep. I am noticing, this year more than ever, that my students are lacking foundational skills to interact with their peers. It is my hope that by allowing them time to work as teams through brain teaser type puzzles and sensory activities, that they will deepen those interpersonal skills that are so vital in the rest of their lives.
