My students need a variety of nonfiction Jane Goodall books such as Who Is Jane Goodall?, and TIME for Kids: Jane Goodall. They also need magnifying glasses and flashlights to help them complete their environmental projects.

My Students
I teach 5th grade reading in one of the best rural schools in Oklahoma! My students are a diverse group with varied levels. Our classroom is a space where students enjoy coming to learn, but in a non-traditional way. We are a Title I school with the majority of our students receiving free lunches. These kids have the biggest hearts you'll ever come across. Every single one of my students has integrity, compassion, and a positive attitude. They are truly amazing people. My school is wonderfully supportive of the project-based learning that we do in our classroom. I couldn't ask for a better environment for these students. We are truly a community!
My Project
In our reading class, we read novels that not only inspire our creativity, but also challenge us to do something to make our world a better place. Last year, we adopted a gorilla from Africa, served our homeless community, and partnered with the Children's Craniofacial Association.
Now, we want to expand our service projects with class sets of the books "Time for Kids Jane Goodall" and "Who Is Jane Goodall?" This is a story of hope and survival, telling the story of Jane Goodall's life as she teaches our students her philosophy of “What you do makes a difference, and you have to decide what kind of difference you want to make.” Our project will begin with the books, and then expand as we research fragmentation and degradation of the chimpanzee's habitat along with the illegal hunting, which are two of the most significant threats to chimpanzees in the wild.
We will study the importance of reducing forest loss, which is essential to preserving the habitat that chimpanzees and many other species need to survive. We will create a timeline of the story, and analyze the challenges needed to be met to create balance between the ecosystem’s ability to support human needs whilst sustaining the other animals who share the landscape. We will create a presentation to share with other students. We will use the guided reading books to connect environmental issues around the world to our project.
