My Students

Our school is an academically successful, rural high school that is filled to the brim with about 900 wonderful students. We serve our military community. Our students are smart, athletic, and driven to succeed.

In the state's ranking system, our high-performing high school has been ranked as a top ten public high school in NC for eleven consecutive years.

We are proud of our success in the classroom.

On September 13, 2018, our community was hit hard by Hurricane Florence. Again, in 2019, we were hit by Hurricane Dorian. Although the hurricanes might have re-shaped us, they won't define us. Even though the storms seem so long ago, some of us are STILL in recovery mode. We were "CarteretStrong" then and my students remain that way now: strong, resilient, flexible, and hard-working.

And NOW, we are dealing with a pandemic and distance learning.

My Project

One of the earth science curriculum standards concerns an environmental component: the effective use of solar energy resources. I hope to expand the solar energy unit to be more individualistic in the hands-on approach. The instructional supplies for my project are 25 solar race cars. I know that my students will have such a great time building and using race cars and varying the amount of solar energy they receive. I know that it is hard to believe, but most of my students have never built a model on their own. When we get ready to have our own version of the "sun race" (there is a national collegiate competition with solar energy cars), my students will not want to be placed in groups. I would love for each individual student to have access to a car. I anticipate getting both qualitative and quantitative measurements in this individualized hands-on lab activity.

Ultimately, by using the solar energy supplies and making the solar cars, my students can more effectively see how the sun can power these small contraptions and certainly the larger ones, like our homes and buildings.

Thank you for considering funding this project for my students and our future. The Great Solar Race is indeed on.
