My students need the education and tools supplied at the East Texas Speech & Debate Camp in order to be as successful as they can be for the upcoming season.

My Students
Speech and debate offers students profound and lasting benefits. With its emphasis on critical thinking, effective communication, independent research and teamwork, debate teaches skills that serve individuals well in school, in the workplace, in political life and in fulfilling their responsibilities as citizens.
The students are growing stronger as critical thinkers, speakers and debaters and are hungry for more.
Our program is only a few years old, but they are excelling more and more every year.
The program has grown so much over the past few years. Last year we became a member of the National Speech & Debate Association with 11 members at the Merit level , 6 members at the Honor level and 6 members at the Excellence level. This is a huge accomplishment in just a couple of years. Last year we had 1 Cross Examination Debate team qualify for State and another qualify for alternate to State. We also had 8 students compete at the Regional competition. This year, we have already had 2 teams qualify for State in Cross Examination Debate and hope to see many more succeed in March.
My Project
This camp will make a huge difference in my student's learning because it will give them the tools and education that they need to get a jump start of the season. It is difficult at times, and overwhelming, to wait until the first day of school to start on the new topic and strategies. It will also give them the confidence that many of them are lacking. Many of them only lack confidence because they are unsure about what they are doing. This camp will prepare them which in turn will give them more confidence when speaking. This camp will also give them information and education that they can bring back to the rest of the group. Unfortunately, as much as I would like to, we cannot afford to take every student in the program to camp. The students attending camp will bring back knowledge to the others that will also help them be successful for the year.
