My Students
My students come from very diverse backgrounds and attend a school that focuses on project based learning. As such, they are accustomed to working on collaborative projects and taking deep dives into several areas of our curriculum.
My students are at a dynamic age; they inquisitively view the world through lenses that are both curious and magical.
As their teacher, I am constantly exploring new ways to keep them enthusiastically engaged in all that we do. They always bring a lot to the table and never cease to amaze me.
My Project
My students will read and analyze The Graveyard Book, by Neil Gaiman. This involves the exploration of several literary concepts and analytic strategies, such as story hills and a hero's journey. I've done this for a few years now and it is always rewarding and popular.
The Graveyard Book can be challenging but it has been my experience that graphic novels can alleviate some of the pressure caused by high-end middle grade literature.
The illustrations do much to tell parts of the tale. In addition to graphic novels, I'm requesting a class set of hardcover books. These will always stay in class and students can take a paperback for reading at home.
