I teach studio art and fine art survey at Covington High School, located 35 miles north of New Orleans. Ours is one of the parishes that were severely damaged by Hurricane Katrina. My school is a relatively large high school with 1530 students enrolled in it. We have a culturally diverse population made up of many religions, races, and ethnic groups, some of whom live in rural settings and others who live in small towns. The school system in this parish has had some major financial setbacks because of the storm. The eastern portion of the parish lost a couple of schools, and damage in varying degrees occurred at every school in the parish. As a consequence, the art department has received no instructional budget for this school year. I want to continue working in clay with my studio art classes, but I also want to initiate a clay project with my fine art survey classes (an art history class with a "hands-on" component). As you can well imagine, all of my students, their friends, or their families have been affected to some extent by the hurricane. Protection from evil forces (hurricanes) will be the theme for my fine art survey project, and I plan to have my students make Middle Ages-inspired clay gargoyle rattles. I will share the clay with the other fine art survey teacher. Continuing with the general idea of protection, I plan to have my studio art classes make Thai-inspired clay "spirit houses" which in Thai culture invite guardian spirits to watch over the home, the garden, the farm and the business. To supply 140 students, I will need about 500 pounds of clay. My studio art students always enjoy working in clay, and I know my fine art survey students will love the experience, too. I believe the projects' theme will be something to which they can all relate. Thank you so much for furthering my instructional goals.
