Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am a first grade teacher in California. Approximately 60 percent of the students at our school are African American, about 30 percent are Latino, and the remaining 10 percent are a mix of Pakistani, Ethiopian, Anglo American and others. I always have many talented children in my classes, and I am always looking to expand the educational program I deliver.

Culturally relevant teaching is a means to understand, appreciate and value people of all backgrounds. Children should have access to books that reflect their own culture, books that reflect cultures that are not theirs but which are present in the local environment, and books that depict cultures from around the world. Children learn best when they feel that they are accepted by others. And further, when they are taught accept others.

This collection of books will provide reading material that the children in my class need to understand the global quality of living in the 21st century. Your generosity will help my students appreciate diverse cultures, come to understand more about their own culture, and will help them to learn to read as well. A true bargain!

It is always a great pleasure for me to see students engaged in lessons that have real meaning for them. The books that you provide will form an important part of the meaningful, culturally relevant curriculum that I strive to deliver. Rest assured: your donation will make a real difference.
