The Giving Tree That Sparks Joy & Intellectual Stimulation
Help me give my students educational games such as Twister that will help them in various domains including improving cognitive functioning, developing social emotional skills and improve in their physical abilities (gross motor and fine motor skills).
We are an elementary school, serving students with severe to profound disabilities that have been identified as having autism, severe cognitive delays, physical disabilities, sensory deficits, and/or are medically fragile, and who are functioning significantly below grade level academically, emotionally and socially. Our school has expanded in size from three locations to five. It also includes a bilingual Yiddish program.
Our students enjoy hands-on interactive engagement such as the holiday events and school parties that we host.
Due to the pandemic and school being moved to 100% remote, they will not be able to engage in the same fun in-person events they are accustomed to.
Our goal is to bring holiday cheer directly to them in the form of interactive learning games.
My Project
As the holidays are approaching and learning has moved from a blended model to 100% remote, we find it even more vital to stay connected with our students and their families. Our Positive Behavior and Interventions (PBIS) Support Team as well as our Events Committee are working to gather new gifts for our students to celebrate the holidays. Following socially distancing guidelines, the teams will be personally delivering gifts to each student’s home to bring holiday cheer.
The gifts serve multiple purposes- to bring joy to our students as well as provide them with a practical educational game that promotes critical thinking, hands-on learning and allows students to use cognitive skills.
Due to severe disabilities of our students, they each have an Individualized Education Plan (IEP). This plan highlights the learning goals for the students. Each game was specifically selected to help the students achieve their learning goals. For example, Connect Four is a game that can help students improve their fine motor abilities as well as increase their ability to follow single step and multi-step directions as indicated on their IEP.
