My Students

Take a moment to think about your kindergarten experience. Did you just get a feeling of nostalgia, too? Kindergarten is an amazing and fun time that teaches you the foundations of reading, writing, and math. My students are getting that same experience, but need basic necessities to make it through everyday life.

The children I teach are energetic, wonderful, hardworking students.

Some of them come from situations that no one should ever experience. They impress me every day with their awesome attitudes and desire to learn. We are a full-day kindergarten class at a Title I school. Most of our students qualify for the free breakfast and lunch program. The student population is 33% Caucasian, 26% Hispanic, 12% Asian, 11% African American, and 28% other.

My Project

I currently run a giving closet at my school. I stock high protein items, and items that are easy to bring home. Many of our students go without enough food at home. I feel as their teacher it is my responsibility to bridge the gap. I also feel it is my duty to be able to assist the families when they are experiencing hard times.

In my closet I stock items such as cereal, fruit, macaroni and cheese cups, coffee, and other high protein snacks.

This helps my students worry less about hunger and focus on their academics. Sitting and listening to the parents over a cup of coffee is sometimes the best medicine.

The giving closet has had a huge impact on my students and their families. I appreciate all your generosity, and I am thankful that I am able to help the students and their families where it counts the most!
