This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Help me share a more current and interesting novel with my students. The novels currently available are falling apart while the most recently adopted novel is a book of stereotypes about an ethnic group that makes up 93% of our student demographic.

My students come from low-to-middle income households.

Approximately 80% of our students qualify for free or reduced lunch. Many do not have books at home and sometimes the only books that they read are at school. WIth the CA budget being what it is, our district has already told us that there aren't any funds for textbooks or novels this next year. The students that will be reading this novel are taking part in a new program that will soon be adopted state-wide that helps them prepare for a career in Graphic Arts.

My Project

The books that donors provide will allow my students to read an award winning novel that will teach them about being a part of a community. This novel will also be an integral component to completing activities both in and out of the classroom. Since students are in the Graphic Arts Pathway, they will be using the novel to create graphic representations of the characters and settings. Since the novel is about a community, I want to incorporate community service into my curriculum.

By donating to this project, donors will be helping students learn about a community that is different than theirs and see its functionality.

This information will then be used as an action research project for students to see how they can incorporate some of the things they have learned in The Giver into their own community.
