My Project

My amazing and creative seventh graders are required to read, The Giver, by Lois Lowry during the last term of the school year. They LOVE graphic novels and anime stories. All students benefit from picture books no matter what age they may be, and my seventh-grade students are no exception!

The graphic novel version of, The Giver, by P.

Craig Russell will be a source of illustrated images that will bring to life the novel for my bright and inquisitive students! This version of the novel, in conjunction with the original source, will help to highlight the themes of the novel and the deep questions about personal freedom vs. socialism.

Students will use the graphic novel to analyze the text in a meaningful way, which includes making inferences and analyzing text in a more accessible way. Some students struggle with reading fluency and having an illustrated version of the text will enhance their experience of the book and what they gain from the reading of it.
