My students need a class set of "The Giver" by Lois Lowry and a copy of the audio book.
This project expired on May 21, 2014.
Hooray! This project is fully funded
Some of my students are still struggling with finding their passion for reading. They would much rather watch the movie or ask someone else how it ends. My goal for each of my students is for them to become lifelong readers.
All of my students have some kind of learning disability.
Some even have emotional or behavioral disorders. We are considered a high poverty school district. My students do not come from print-rich environments and do not have access to a lot of books.
My students are required to read every day in my classroom. They read books that they have independently chosen, but I also read aloud books to them to help them increase their comprehension and fluency. They became interested in The Giver after I read the first chapter to them and told them that a movie is being made. They are really excited to read the book and want to know more about Jonas' crazy world.
The books that we read aloud as a class helps to improve the students' comprehension and fluency skills.
It will also, hopefully, encourage them to want to read more on their own. Your donation to this project will allow the students to be able to think of reading as "fun" instead of something they have to do for school.
