The Gift of Words - Dictionaries for ESOL Students

My students need 5 Longman Dictionaries of American English and 5 Picture Dictionaries. The dictionaries will become the property of the students.

My Students

Unlock the meaning of English words. Develop vocabulary skills. Increase reading comprehension. Build effective study skills. Access to a quality dictionary would do just that and more for students on a mission to reach advanced English language proficiency in my ESOL class.

The students in the ESOL class come from a variety of cultural and linguistic backgrounds, but they all share the urgent need for vocabulary development.

While I provide access to the dictionaries in the classroom, their work at home is hindered by the lack of skills to tackle unfamiliar words.

My Project

Having a quality English dictionary of American English at home as a learning tool would tremendously impact their achievement. The parents, who are also nonnative speakers of English, would be able to consult the dictionary and help their children with homework, spelling words and their meanings. The dictionary would help the older students with other academic subjects as well. Social studies, science, and language arts assignments would be done with more thought and better results when the students have access to the dictionary at home. For younger students, picture dictionaries would provide a framework of reference, make it easier to teach thematic units and organize vocabulary around certain topics.

This project would positively impact my students because they would have the opportunity to use the dictionary, build and expand their vocabulary, and improve reading and writing skills.

A dictionary is a very powerful tool that would support the English language learners through their school career and beyond.
