The Gift of the Giver

Help me give my students new copies of The Giver. Many of our books are about 10 years old, so they've seen a lot of wear and tear. I'm hoping to replace the worst ones with this project.

My Project

Our 7th grade team has been reading The Giver with students for the last few years to teach about Utopian and Dystopian Societies. Some of our copies are 10+ years old and are falling apart! Our team would love to give students a chance to read newer books without missing pages, or chunks of the book coming out while they read.

My goal for this project is to help my team with replacing our worst 20 books with newer copies.

My students are special because they're so respectful of the books we have this year. They deserve better materials to meet their needs.

While reading The Giver, students will compare the characters, setting, and community rules to our previous Utopian/Dystopian novel (Among the Hidden). Throughout reading, students will put themselves in the place of characters to see the world through their eyes. They'll be able to see how different the community where Jonas and the Giver live is compared towards ours and compared to the community in Among the Hidden.

Students will learn to see the world through the eyes of another person as they put themselves in the place of the book characters. They'll get jobs assigned to them, as the kids in the story do, at a Celebration of Twelve.

Students will learn to work toward alleviating suffering in others through a final project where they create their own Utopian society. In this society, they will pinpoint a problem to focus on alleviating (illness, homelessness, poverty, etc.) and create a society where there are things in place to prevent it.

In order to measure success in my students’ understanding of compassion, I will use their final project. When they are presenting it to the class, I will have them identify how their society is a compassionate one.
