Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My school is a middle school ranging from grades 6-8 located in West Harlem, with many of our students receiving free/reduced-price lunch. The students come from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds, and many of the students are English Language Learners.

My students are intelligent, hard-working, and compassionate.

They enjoy hands-on learning experiences, opportunities to be creative, and taking on academic challenges. As their speech teacher, I want to be able to provide them with everything they need in order to be successful learners.

My Project

As a speech teacher, I am constantly working on literacy skills such as reading comprehension and written expression, however, the basis of these skills is the ability to read. With some students, we are working hard towards their reading fluency and phonological awareness skills so that they can begin to read and write independently.

My students who are working on reading skills have repeatedly requested high-interest books that match their reading level.

The books in this project were made specifically for that reason! These books belong to the Branches series from Scholastic and are high-interest books that my students picked themselves. Not only will it be great to have decodable books, but it's even better that these were requested by students. They are excited to read! Additionally, the sight word practice will increase reading fluency.
