Our school is located in Detroit, Michigan. My students face many challenges outside the classroom that other children do not face. We are a Title 1 school and students receive free breakfast and lunch.
They are great kids who overcome more than many can imagine walking through the school doors each day.
Teaching High School to this group is a challenge; students are often below grade level, but also strive to greatness every day! My students define the word perseverance. I hope to continue to provide supplies, rewards, and technology to help my students continue to make great strides.
This project is to purchase a classroom set of the novel Just Mercy by Bryan Stevenson. This is the young adult version adapted just for this purpose a class novel study.
The movie has generated interest and engagement - with these books we can harness that excitement into reading more in-depth about the injustices in the criminal justice system.
Whenever students take an interest in something outside the classroom, I try to find a way to bring it into the classroom to increase engagement - this story is perfect for this purpose. Please help us to create engagement in this novel study!
