This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a special education teacher in a high poverty area. I teach Kindergarten through Fifth grade students in my classroom. My job is to teach them Reading, Language, and Math. These are at-risk students in a high need community. They are at risk for health reasons, for educational reasons, and for environmental reasons.
I have a ghost that lives in my old white markerboard. She just won't leave us alone. All past lessons refuse to leave. I've tried turtle wax, WD-40, Pledge, official cleaner/restorer but to no avail. My students just shake their heads. I have resorted to using my kidney-shaped table and writing upside down so they can read it. While this ability amazes my students, my elbows are black and not everyone gets to see the lesson. About the only thing my markerboard is still good for is the magnetic properties. We have named our ghost, Maggie. But we would like her to leave.
After years of using my board, a new board would solve my current teaching problem. Most of my students are visual learners or cannot write well. My board has always been helpful in their learning and being engaged in the lessons. They like my little pictures I draw to drive home the lesson. They miss my little drawings that create more interest and understanding than just writing.
Your help in getting this new clean, white, magnetic board will truly make it possible for my students to follow along and get ahead in school. It will really help them pay attention and stay engaged in what we are learning, especially my Attention Deficit students. I teach in a very visual style, and they need this type of teaching to help comprehension, understanding, and memory skills. I believe teaching should be creative and fun and I would like to help them also see that again.
