My Project

In this project, The Geometry of Density: Exploring Recycling Through Math, students will engage in a real-world application of mathematical concepts by examining the density of everyday recyclable materials commonly found in their snack packaging. Working in small collaborative groups, students will measure the mass and volume of items such as plastic bottles, chip bags, and aluminum cans to compute their density. Using these calculations, they will then scale up their data to estimate the classroom’s weekly recycling contribution and its potential impact on reducing landfill volume. Through this activity, students will deepen their understanding of proportional reasoning, volume, and unit conversion—all while fostering environmental awareness.

Exploring trash sustainability using snacks to study density is the focus of this project, which requires graph paper, dry erase markers, classroom snacks, and a Teachers Pay Teachers gift card to purchase engaging math posters.

The purpose is to help Algebra and Geometry students connect math concepts with real-world issues through hands-on learning. By collecting data from their own recyclable snack packaging, students will see how individual choices affect broader environmental outcomes—and use math to model those effects.
