My Students

In our school's library, we promote the enjoyment of hands-on learning and exploration by using many different resources. One of my goals is for students to be excited about school and confident in their abilities. I believe it's important for students to participate in open-ended activities.

Our school is in a very rural location in North Carolina with many of our students' families having lived here all of their lives.

We have 242 students total in Kindergarten through fifth grade. Our racial population includes several Native American, Multiracial, Hispanic, African American, and Caucasian students. We have a large percentage of students who qualify for free lunch. Our students love special school-wide programs and activities that promote fun learning. Teachers work together to teach collaboratively along with the support of specials teachers and the entire school staff. The PTA and community-at-large is supportive of special activities in and out of school. This community loves its elementary school!

My Project

Many students, by far the majority, do not know how to play board games or cards. As we know, games teach advanced thinking skills such as strategies, multi-step processes, and planning. Playing games also teaches basic interpersonal life skills such as communication, collaboration, and sportsmanship. Social, math, and reading skills are integrated into most games also. So, while students are having fun playing games they are learning, they are also learning activities that can help bridge generation gaps. Having fun while learning promotes the love of school, enjoyment of a fair contest, interacting with others, and the enjoyment of learning.
