Most adults learn best from materials that are interesting, intriguing, novel, and fun. Preschoolers are no different. The Early Childhood Special Education and “At-Risk” students in our classroom spend the day playing in various centers of the classroom. They don't realize how much they are learning about themselves and the world around them in these centers everyday. One of the most popular activities in our classroom is Bingo. While the children strive to be the first one who gets to shout BINGO, they don't realize all that they are learning. The teachers around them are taking mental notes about who can match symbols, letters and numbers. They also learn important skills such as turn taking, working towards a goal, and sticking with a task till completion. One of the most important skills the children learn involves learning to be the winner, the loser, but most importantly, to have the courage to try the game again after a loss. I know my students will thoroughly enjoy playing the “Bingo Bears Game Set.” They will also be begging to play “Animal Soundtracks”, a bingo game with sounds. While many students enjoy playing games, for some of my special education students, a game is too complex and lengthy to be played. For these students, I am requesting new puzzles and sorting games. These games can be played alone. After the children get used to the new activities they will be able to play initially with an adult and then play the new game with a peer. Lastly, I am requesting a set of balls to use in motor skills games outside on our playground and in our gymnasium. After all, with the obesity epidemic of today it is important to work with students from a very young age to instill healthy exercise habits! Thank you for taking the time to read through my proposal! I hope that you will consider helping my preschoolers to grow further and reach to new heights socially, physically and academically!
