My students need art supplies, index cards, index card boxes, and the City of Ember books to tie 6th grade reading and social studies with financial literacy.
My students love to learn with a hands-on approach. This gives their learning authenticity and allows them to make deeper connections to the concepts they are learning.
My students are learning that the world is a very complex place and that all things are connected.
We've learned how ancient civilizations have impacted our society today through agricultural techniques, art skills, and modern day languages. They've learned that a volcano erupting halfway around the world impacts them in Southern California. They see how literature references our past world and our current day societies, and they do start to see that this complex world is very connected. They want to learn more. Now we are looking into combining all these elements with financial literacy to make an impact on our entire school.
My Project
Students will use the materials to create a simulated world. They will choose a career and research the average starting salary and college debt. From their career choice, they will be placed in a very specific country based on their skills. Our countries are based on goods and services they provide: Manufacturing, Trade, Agricultural, and a Coastal Colony. The name badges will help identify where each student lives. From there, they will need to choose a car, a house, insurance, and other small luxuries that accrue monthly expenses. They will be using an Excel sheet to record all expenses and salaries. Index cards and boxes will organize supplies. One country will be hit by an unexpected natural disaster, which shows that life isn't always fair. Art materials are for each country to make a special craft based on their specific skills. These will be sold at our school carnival in June to raise money. All money will be donated to our Student Store for merchandise to support our school community.
Students will learn how to manage a monthly budget and a realistic view of how the world works.
They will tie it in with dystopian literature (City of Ember), our ancient civilizations curriculum, and even environmental science. This also allows our 6th grade students to give back to their school before heading off to Middle School. All money earned from selling their goods will be used for our entire school by providing more merchandise to our Student Store.
