Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My chemistry classroom consists of 25 wonderful students per period with 5 periods for a total of 125 students. Of my 125 students, 30% of which are in the special needs population. My community is situated in a densely populated urban area of North Jersey known as Union City. 98% of my students receive the federal free/reduced breakfast and lunch program at school. Most of my students have never been to a farm nor have the ability to financially or otherwise to visit a farm. Due partly to the lack of accessibility to fresh farm vegetables most of my students have a love affair with processed and fast food. When I ask my students about vegetables that they consume on a daily basis, most of them named the common few. I feel it is up to us, the teachers and the community, to expose our students to the variety of vegetables that nature has to offer as well as teaching them about how foods can be grown pesticide and chemical free.
My Project
Most of my students have never been to a farm nor have the availability to visit a farm. Due partly to the lack of accessibility to fresh farm vegetables most of my students have a love affair with processed food and fast food With the increased consumption of ultra-processed food and a genetic predisposition due to their ethnic heritage, many of my students are on the fast track to develop health issues most especially diabetes. By acquiring a worm composting bin and 5 tier vertical gardening system, my students will be able to see the possibility and ease of growing their own food in an urban setting. Secondly, they will also be able to enjoy the fruit of their labor such as carrots, cucumbers, tomatoes, lettuce, etc.
My students will be divided into groups to tend to the vertical garden and composting bin daily.
Students will also learn and study the science of composting when they collect vegetable scraps from their and fellow classmates meals, reinvest them back into the composting bin and allow the worms to get to work. We will take the produce we harvest and be able to teach the students how to make simple but healthy lunches utilizing the produce that they harvest. The ultimate goal is for my students to develop the love of growing their own vegetables at home and to incorporate vegetables as a regular part of their diet. My students and I will be very thankful for any donations toward making this project a reality.
