My Students

I work with excited, curious, and determined elementary students at a Title I school located in the small Northern Charlotte-Mecklenburg town of Cornelius, NC. Music is a large part of my students' lives whether it is through viral dances, movies, private lessons or dance. My students get to experience music in different way through my classroom whether it is singing songs, playing barred instruments, dancing, and/or playing the recorder. They love the freedom of expression music provides in school and how that freedom of expression applies to other academic areas.

My Project

The recorder is many students' gateway into what it means to learn to read music, improvise, and practice a particular skill. The curriculum and the music relies on recorders to help push the student's musicianship to the next level.

When we learn to play these recorders we are learning how to listening, play solo and with others, practice, read music, and create our own music as well.

When my students are learning to play recorder we emphasize the importance of practicing on your own and a very important character trait we encourage in all our students: the power perseverance!
