Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
"This is not just a research report, this is a wakeup call...We use the word astounding in the title because we have been truly amazed at the elevated student outcomes resulting from participation in dual language programs...dual language closes the academic achievement gap" (Collier & Thomas, 2004)
My students are second graders in a dual language program.
My school has adopted a dual language model, the model research has shown most effective in raising the literacy achievement of English language learners, as opposed to an ESL pullout or transitional bilingual program. Students learn in Spanish for 100% of the day in kindergarten, 90% of the day in 1st grade, 80% in 2nd grade and so on. By the time they reach fifth grade, native and non-native speakers alike are able to read, write, and communicate fluently in both English and Spanish. I am proud to be a part of such an innovative program; and am continually amazed at what students' little brains are able to handle at such a young age!
My Project
I am requesting more children's books for our classroom library. In order for dual language programs to be successful, students must be completely immersed in literature from both languages. Unfortunately Spanish books are much more expensive than English titles, which can create an imbalance. It is important that students have access to a wide range of texts from a variety of genres in order to develop a rich vocabulary.
While most students come from Spanish-speaking households, many students do not. I have selected many bilingual children's books so that students are able to read the English and Spanish print side by side. For my Spanish-speakers, I have made a special effort to include books that will illicit pride in their Hispanic heritage.
Becoming bilingual opens up countless doors; not only career opportunities, but opportunities for cross-cultural friendships and understanding.
