My Project
My journey as a teacher has introduced me and my students to many wonderful stories and experiences. However, one of the most engaging and inspiring is the story of the Freedom Writers and Erin Gruwell. My students and I both love the story of people finding and sharing common experience, discovering their connections, and recognizing themselves as writers.
In my ELA classes at Del City Middle School, one of the first things I encourage my students to do is to find their voice.
Many of my students are special needs kiddos, and they come to me with a pre-concieved notion that they are somehow "less than" their neurotypical peers. In my class, along with grammar and sentence structure, my goal is to help them find that they are exceptional, with connections to each other and the world around them. So, we write a lot, and we journal our thoughts.
The following items are aimed at providing an outlet for self expression and organization. Many of my students struggle with executive function and organization, so we have lots of color tools to help them stay organized. Markers and Expos, as well as containers to hold them, allow for color coding and creativity. Pencils, erasers, and composition notebooks help them contain their thoughts. A second composition notebook allows students to have their creative ideas and personal thoughts in one place, and their academic notes in another. Headphones allow for them to learn at their own pace in a form suited to them, as well as blocking the sounds of other methods of learning around them. Stamps allow me to reinforce positive learning quickly and discreetly, and the educational posters allow me to reinforce terms and lessons from class as well as allowing independent reinforcement and visual learning.
