My Project
My 7th grade students are crazy for literature! They love to read, plain and simple. That's not to say what they read is plain and simple--they crave a good challenge. I'm looking for a way to add interest, variety, and rigor to our classroom library by securing a number of free verse novels.
What I've discovered over these last few months is that as much as my students enjoy reading, they really haven't experienced the genre of the free verse novel.
Rich in language and emotion, free verse enables its readers to develop their own meanings and connections, creating a more personalized reading experience.
I would like to implement lit circles using only free verse novels. My students would form their own book club, choose their own novel, decide their own roles in the group setting. Rigor? Yes. Engaging? Most definitely!
With these novels, my students would literally be "circling" the (free verse) universe!
