This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our Founding Fathers are alive and well...on the Internet! As a history teacher in a Title I high school, in a poor urban district where 100% qualify for free lunch, teaching students research skills that will help them succeed in college is an absolute must.
Many of our students do not have access to computers at home. With over 2000 students in our building, finding computer time in our media center (which has only 30 computers) is very difficult. Many students have to arrange to work after school or at the local public libraries to conduct research. Unfortunately, this means that the instructional support they need to conduct effective research is missing.
By providing mini laptops in the classroom my students would be able to conduct research under my guidance right in class. There are countless wonderful historical sites from which my students can learn. In addition, I would be able to teach them how to identify credible websites. They will also be taught how to correctly cite their on-line sources.
In this day and age most research is done on-line. There is nothing students cannot learn on their own, even history. My students are at a distinct disadvantage when they head off to college without the critical skills of being able to identify credible websites and citing their sources. The college research paper will be less of a challenge for my disadvantaged students once they learn these skills. Your donation will undoubtedly help my students prepare for and succeed in college.
