This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
How do you get kids into the school library? There is an art to it. You have to ride the latest wave. Find out the most recent kid craze - and get books about it. All those books will be checked out in no time.
I don't need to tell you the latest fashion at our K-8 center.
It's a no brainer. My kids are c-r-a-z-y about Disney's new Star Wars movie. Many have seen 'The Force Awakens' twice. (As far as I can tell, the record-holder is a middle-schooler who's watched it seven times.) Who are our kids? What are they like? Let me give you a little background information. Most come from families with a low household income. They tend to be first-generation Americans. (Mom and dad are usually immigrants from the Caribeean, or Central / South America.) Our kids love to read, and they love their school library.
My Project
What good are books like these? What will kids learn from them? Well, imagine that you're trying to get kids to do exercise. You can put them on treadmills, have them do push-ups etc. - or you can take them to a field on a beautiful sunny day, and throw them a ball! Teaching kids to read is a little like that. You can do things the hard way...or the ridiculously easy way. Give kids books based on 'The Force Awakens' and a) they'll spend h-o-u-r-s practicing their reading b) they'll have a really positive experience from books.
We're talking about a lot of kids here.
Don't forget that these books are going to a school library. Our school has 800 students in grades K-8. Each year, your twelve books should be checked out by hundreds of children. By helping to maintain a school library, your project will really give bang for the buck!
