The Fishy Field Trip and Food Chain Frenzy--Novels to Teach Science
The cost of multiple copies of six science chapter books for young readers--including "The Fishy Field Trip," "Butterfly Battle," and "Food Chain Frenzy"--all from Barnes and Noble, is $454, including shipping and <a target="new" href="http://www.donorschoose.org/html/fulfillment.htm" onclick="g_openWindow('http://www.donorschoose.org/html/fulfillment.htm', 300, 800, 'fulfillwindow');return false;">fulfillment</a>.
Our school serves a very diverse socioeconomic base, and I teach all subjects to my class. Over the last eight years of teaching, I have found it most difficult to teach every subject every day. Realizing that science was a favorite time of the day for my students, I decided to integrate my reading curriculum with science.
I have written units for seven Magic School Bus chapter books that are relevant to science standards for third grade. I designed these novel units to introduce, teach, and review the reading standards for third grade. This integration allows extra time for many hands-on science experiences and reinforces science concepts while practicing essential reading skills. I have used this approach for three years, and the chapter books that I have are damaged and many pages are missing.
I have found that this integration is beneficial to all students. Many teachers at our school are interested in this approach that I have designed. I am teaching two classes this year for teachers in Greenville county in which this approach is the springboard for my writing lessons.
I teach twenty to twenty-seven students each year, and I am in need of new novels for these units. My students enjoy reading the Magic School Bus novels and having their teacher take them on many science adventures. This integrated approach works, and my students beg for more and more science. Science content is continuously reinforced through the novels. Reading skills are polished and perfected as students complete the novel packet/questions that I have personally designed based on the state standards.
