Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our wonderful school is in a high poverty area in Chicago. My junior high students are polite, well-mannered, hard-working students who come from good homes. Many of my students are diverse learners with ADHD, learning disabilities or cognitive delays; many come from another country or are first-generation Americans. They all face challenges both in and out of the classroom. Despite their obstacles, my students come into my classroom eager to learn and do their best every day. These students are extremely diverse in terms of academic ability. This diversity is great, but, as a teacher, it can be a challenge to reach all my students when they are at different levels academically.

My goal is to make sure that all students, regardless of where they are academically, have all the tools they need to be successful and become lifelong learners.

Each and every one of them has the potential to be successful. I want to equal the playing field for my students so they have all the tools necessary to excel in school and in life.

My Project

Due to budget cuts our school library was eliminated three years ago. Our students no longer have the opportunity to check out books, read them and return them the following week. Many of our parents work long hours and can't take their children to the local library. Our neighborhood has issues that prevent our students from walking alone to the library as I did as a child. I want my students to have the opportunity that other children in the surrounding areas have.

Little Free Library is a nonprofit organization that inspires a love of reading, builds community, and sparks creativity by fostering neighborhood book exchanges.Through Little Free Libraries (LFL), millions of books are exchanged each year, profoundly increasing access to books for readers of all ages and backgrounds.

I see Little Free Libraries scattered in various neighborhoods throughout the city of Chicago and the suburbs. However, I teach on the Southwest side of Chicago and I have never seen one there. I went to the LFL website and searched by zip code only to find that there is not one single Little Free Library in our area.

This project will give us a kit to build the actual storage box for the books, paint and paint brushes so we can decorate it and make it our own. Once this is complete, we will erect the LFL in front of our school. I hope our students will be able to walk up to the LFL and choose a book that interests them, take it home and enjoy it. In turn, I want them to be able to leave a book that they loved for one of their peers to read. This project will not only build pride in the neighborhood but will also encourage our students to become life long learners.
