The Fire is Catching! A request for Mockingjay by S Collins
My students need 30 copies of "Mockingjay" to complete The Hunger Games trilogy. This would allow us to have a classroom set that all 105 students may enjoy.
William Styron said, "A good book should leave you... slightly exhausted at the end. You live several lives while reading it." This final installment of The Hunger Games, Mockingjay, will be a workout for my students. It's challenging, compelling, heartbreaking, and, yes, exhausting!
Located in the heart of an urban community, our junior high school consists of 7th and 8th grade students.
We are a district of bright, inspirational, minority students. Our district is considered economically disadvantaged with our students living in high poverty areas.
My Project
Do you remember what it was like to finish your "favorite" book? There was a mixture of sadness that it was over and yet, a true love of the book and its characters. Do you remember how you could almost see those characters in your head and how, on the best parts, you would close your eyes to go to sleep at night and the book would play like a movie in your head? This is the love of reading that I am trying to inspire in my students.
I am requesting 30 copies of Mockingjay so that my students can finish their quest of this trilogy. We will be exploring cross-curricular aspects of the novel, including analyzing character development over the course of the three novels, will discuss and challenge the world around us, deepen our understanding of character, plot, setting, theme, and author's purpose, discuss, and say goodbye to our favorite Hunger Games characters: Katniss, Gale, Peeta, Haymitch, Finnick, Beetee, Johanna, and so many more.
Catching Fire is a novel about sustainability, endurance, and survival.
My students can relate to many of the themes in this novel on a personal level. This classroom set will allow our students to read a relative, contemporary, compelling piece of literature that we can engage, analyze, synthesize, and evaluate as a class. This novel will allow them to continue to engage in and make relevant meaning of something they have read.
