This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Friendships are one of the best things about school, and one of the strongest reinforcements of school attendance but what happens when children can’t form friendships because of their feelings of being scared or angry, excited? It makes it difficult. As a preschool special education teacher, it is of utter importance to help encourage friendships and social emotional development through contrived and natural social interactions and manipulatives.

My Pre-K (PAL) students look forward to peer interactions and those that don’t, it is my job to teach them.

We are fortunate enough to have a good amount of space where the children are able to have various areas in the classroom (Dramatic play, blocks, cars, library, etc). There isn't much in terms of a variety of manipulatives for fostering Social Emotional development and emotions,

Having a variety of manipulatives that they can hold, see and touch is a step closer to social emotional development and labeling their emotions and a step closer to forging friendships when knowing how they feel. Having students with multiple disabilities and various social skills is a challenge; this would greatly help foster their skills.

My Project

During this past year with COVID and distance learning it has been very difficult to teach my littles online and help foster their Social Emotional development through a computer screen. Some of my students have NEVER been in a classroom setting and it will be all new to them. The first couple of weeks are the hardest and I would love to give my kids an area where they feel safe and their emotions are validated with pictures and emotions dolls, sensory calming toys and fidgets that are used to calm them. Part of Social Emotional development is labeling feelings and I would love to foster this seeing as some of my students are nonverbal or have speech delays these items would give them the opportunity to help me understand how they are feeling. With my students learning about their feelings it will better to help me when trying to have them socialize as well with their peers. These items will benefit every student returning to my classroom as well as newbies to the class.
