The Exploration Of Electricity!

Help me give my students hands-on equipment that teaches the principles of electricity! These kits will show students real-world use of loads, switches, conductors, insulators, and power sources in a safe environment.

My Students

My students live in a neighborhood afflicted by poverty. Well-meaning parents often don't know how to support learning at home; and frequently the effects of low-income interrupt early-years literacy development. The students in my class face many harsh realities of poverty. Despite the uncertainty of their home lives, the classroom provides them encouragement, stability, and crucial skills.

Hands-on learning gives students the concrete examples to help them process abstract ideas.

In class inquiry activities transport students to novel places and times and increases their knowledge of the world. Research is documenting the hardship poverty creates in education. Over 51 percent of students in our school receive free or reduced-price meals and a third of them are native Spanish speakers. These are my students and they desire to build a better life for themselves.

Sharing my passion for learning is an underlining goal for my year. Having interest and curiosity for the world and how everything fits together is so important for these students. Science is one of the abstract concepts that is full of real world examples. Trial and error with equipment allows children to learn first hand.

My Project

Fifth grade science standards have students learning all about electricity. Students are introduced to terms like loads, series circuits, simple circuits, conductors, resistors and many more. Although electricity surrounds us in our homes, few students have a grasp on the details of how electricity truly works.

Experimentation with hands-on supplies creates a lasting understanding and these kits are the key to lighting up student knowledge.

Using wires, switches, and loads will give students immediate feedback as to whether they have applied the principles we have learned in class. Unlike the world around us, filled with dangerous levels of electricity, these battery powered kits provide a safe environment for experimentation.
