My students need funding to purchase tickets to express their patriotism by joining the Miami Heat players to sing the national anthem and experience a game.
My school is in a city riddled with poverty and violence. Students live in neighborhoods where gangs are a way of life. But at school, they are safe and in a caring environment where we strive to teach them to work hard and make college a goal. We want to award our students for doing well.
Our students are achievers and beating the odds.
Despite the fact that many of our students only receive food at school (89% free and reduced lunch) and live in what many would call "bad" areas, they show up ready to learn. We have a great mix, about a third each, of African American, Caucasian, and Hispanic students. Our teachers do their best to engage our kids and instill in them a passion for education. We see the potential in our kids and realize that success is in their future despite the fact that many have counted them out. Our students are loving, enjoy telling stories, and playing sports. Football and basketball are their favorites! They aspire to be professional players and we are trying to show them how to make it happen. Our kids want more out of life than what their surroundings have to offer and we want to continue to encourage them.
Students will learn the value of hard work. They will have to earn their way onto this trip through academic achievement. By working hard, they will be rewarded. In addition, students will learn what it means to be patriotic. Since they will get to join the players on the court to sing the National Anthem, they will get a greater understanding of why we do this. Finally, our students will gain an experience they never dreamed possible. Many of them watch the Miami Heat play on TV and have always wanted to see a game, but it has never been possible. You have the ability to make their dreams a reality.
I think it will make a difference because it will make dreams and goals seem more tangible.
If we can show them something they see on TV live and in living color, they will be able to see the possibilities and that there is more outside of where they are from. We hope to not only have fun with them on this trip, but to inspire them. Our students will get to see that gangs and violence are not a way of life and that if they dream big and work hard, success will be theirs!Read More
