My students need Chromebooks to create video games about evolution on Scratch!

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Where is the intersection of art and science? Light passing through stained glass relies on the addition of minerals to produce color. The latest fashions can now integrate circuitry and user-responsive lights. Video games are an art form I want my students to adapt to learn about evolution.
My students have huge dreams and amazing life stories.
They are all recent immigrants who have come to the U.S. seeking a better life through education. They are all living dual lives, learning English and how to live in a new country. Many have faced incredible hardship to come to our school - dangerous journeys away from violence and over borders, as well as the hardship of living in a new country without many resources. Over 90% of our students are free- and reduced lunch eligible. Many have faced down gangs, personal tragedies, and sometimes near-death experiences to get here. I find that despite language barriers and incredible ranges of personal history, the projects that have the greatest impact on the most kids are those that are Empowering Students Through Art.
My Project
I am a science teacher with an eye towards design. How things function, whether they are successful or not, depends on the thoughtfulness of the designer towards the user. Making games is incredibly design-centered. Just as we appreciate a painting or a sculpture because it speaks to us, video games need to appeal to their user, the player, for them to be appreciated.
And what better game of winners and losers is there than evolution? Using Charles Darwin's Theory of Evolution by Natural Selection as our inspiration, I want my students to design simple games that incorporate evolutionary concepts such as variation, adaptation, environmental change, and migration. The Chromebooks we are requesting can easily run web-based, kid-friendly programming languages such as Scratch and Snap. Using these new computers, students will design games that nurture both their inner scientist and artist.
For many students, playing video games is their life.
I want to transform this fascination from consumption to creation. By designing games that incorporate science, they will embrace the mindset that empowers both scientists and artists - open-mindedness and inquisitiveness. With your help, my students will do what great artists do - engage us with the world, bridge disciplines, and light a spark of imagination in others. Thank you!
