The Effect of Fertilizers on Algae Growth- Spectrophotometer
Help me give my students give the experience of saving the world allowing them to investigate the effect of nitrogen on freshwater algae.

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
As the world continues to evolve, we encounter new and complex problems everyday. Through these complex problems, our students need to develop the skills that will enable them to tackle these challenging issues that affect our existence and well-being. It all begins in the classroom. My school lacks some of the resources needed to build these skills, which is why obtaining biotechnology equipment may be conducive to my students' learning. This can spark their curiosity in science and be the future Earth-saving planeteers (or at least give them an amazing science experience).
The spectrophotometer will allow my students to conduct an investigation to test the effect of fertilizers on algae growth (Chlorella).
Spectrophotometers measure light absorption in a sample at a specific wavelength. A set wavelength absorbed by the chlorophyll found in Chlorella would qualitatively measure the amount of algae in a sample. As a undergrad biology major, I was introduced to this technique. Exposing our students early on before college can motivate them to pursue STEM majors and possibly careers.
This project is not just about getting fancy equipment but changing the mindset of potential future leaders and citizens of this world. Reading an article about algae or fertilizers is not enough to reach this goal. Think about your last science experience. Was it positively memorable? Your donation can provide them with an experience everyone wishes they've had.
