Please help us transition from a "School in Need of Improvement" to a "Blue Ribbon School". I teach 5th grade at a high need inner-city school and love it! I won't make excuses about why we were designated as a School in Need of Improvement, however with the return of a former principal this year we are going to do everything we can not just to get off of that list, but to earn the distinction of Blue Ribbon School. It's a lofty goal, but we're thinking big because our students and families deserve it.
After meeting with the State Board of Regents, and spending many hours this summer developing a plan for improvement as a member of our "School Quality Review" team, I have reflected a lot on my practice. One of the most crucial tasks I have is to assess my students' learning and modify instruction to meet their needs. Traditionally, this can be accomplished through tests, quizzes, asking questions in class, projects, performances, and hands on activities. None of those provide instant hard data about all of my students. When students answer questions in class I can informally assess what they know, or when I give tests or quizzes, I can find out what students have learned, but by then it's often late in the process. The challenge is to assess all of the students so that I know during the lesson how my students are doing. This would allow me to reteach or make modifications on the spot. It would improve my instruction and ultimately their learning.
After really thinking a lot about this dilemma and doing some research, I have identified a product that provides an answer. The Edugame 26 Wand Pack provides each student with a wireless remote that can be used to answer questions posed during lessons. The questions could come in a variety of formats and could be embedded in PowerPoint Presentations or I could make them up on the spot. I could poll my class to see how well they understand what is being taught in the middle of a lesson. Their responses will also be available by individual so I can make the necessary modifications or offer extra review sessions for certain students when needed. The software can export reports to Excel which is what I use for my grade book. The Edugame comes with 2 review games (Jeopardy style, and race style) which are easy to use and fun for the students. Lastly, the kit comes with an Elementary Social Studies CD that aligns with the NYS Social Studies Test that the students will take in November of 5th grade.
I hope you can tell that I'm dedicated to helping my students and school community improve. I apologize for this being so long, but I want all of you potential donors to know that I've identified a problem, conducted research, identified a potential solution, and will do everything I can to help transform your donation into years of high level learning for all of my students. Thank you.
